Eastern Arizona College

The visitor's guide to EAC — 130+ years of history, Gila Monsters athletics, and the campus at the heart of Thatcher.

Ask anyone in the Gila Valley what defines Thatcher and the answer comes quickly: Eastern Arizona College. Founded in 1888 — before Arizona was even a state — EAC has educated generations of valley families and grown into a comprehensive community college whose campus, athletics, and arts programs shape daily life across Graham County.

01 A College Older Than the State

From Church Academy to Community College

EAC opened its doors in 1888 as a small academy established by Latter-day Saint settlers, just seven years after Thatcher itself was settled. Arizona would not achieve statehood for another 24 years. Through the early 20th century the school evolved through successive identities — academy, junior college, and finally a public community college — transferring to public control in the 1930s and taking the name Eastern Arizona College in the 1960s.

That unbroken run makes EAC the oldest continuously operating community college in Arizona, a distinction the college has held through more than 130 years of continuous instruction on its Thatcher campus.

The Campus Today

The modern campus anchors the center of Thatcher along College Avenue, with academic buildings, student housing, the Fine Arts complex, and athletic facilities serving thousands of students annually. EAC offers transfer degrees, career and technical certificates, and workforce training — including programs built around the region's mining, healthcare, and agriculture industries — and it ranks among the Gila Valley's largest employers.
